Cancer is the most expensive leading cause of death according tot he American Cancer Society. Cancer costs more in productivity and lost life than other diseases like AIDS, malaria, flu and other communicable diseases.
Cancer together with heart disease and diabetes account for more than 60 percents of death worldwide but receives less than 3 percent of funding both public and private for global health.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has long predicted that cancer would eventually overtake heart disease as the leading cause of death. About 7.6 million people dies of cancer in 2008, and about 12.4 million new cases are diagnosed each year. Many groups are now pushing for more attention to non-infectious causes of death. Major efforts are considered to look at the economic cost of non-infectious dieases in terms of global productivity. Cancer scientists and advocates urged more money to fight cancer in poor countries. Only 5 percent of cancer treatment and prevention money goes to the countries that bear 80 percent of the burden of the disease, says Dr. Julio Frenk of Harvard’s School of Public Health.
“We are literally being victims of our own success” – more people are surviving infectious diseases and living long enough to develop cancer, but treatment gaps remain.—Dr. Julio Frenk of Harvard’s School of Public Health
“Cure rates for breast cancer are 80 percent or more in the U.S. and half that in many other countries. Many treatments are quite affordable “and could be successfully delivered in even the poorest settings,” —Dr. Lawrence Shulman, Chief Medical Officer of the Dana-Faber Cancer Institute, Boston
