There are three laboratory blood tests that can be used to diagnose type 2 diabetes, namely:

  1. Random blood glucose test -a blood sample is taken from your arm and is brought to the laboratory for analysis. The sample can be taken whether or not you have taken food. Your health professional will receive the results within a week. If symptoms are manifested and results show above 11.1 millimole per liter , you are diagnosed with diabetes. If results show above the normal glucose level and no symptoms are observed, you will be asked to proceed to fasting blood count and if necessary, perform the oral glucose test.
  2. Fasting blood glucose test – in this kind of test your are not going to eat at least 8 hours before blood sample is obtained. Usually blood sample is taken early in the morning with no food and drink  intake overnight. The blood sample is brought to the laboratory for analysis and results are available within the day. If test shows above 7 millimoles pero liter, and you show symptoms, you are diagnosed to have diabetes. If  you have no sympstoms but result show above normal level, you need to repeat the test or take the oral glucose tolerance test.
  3. Oral Glucose Tolerance test - in this kind of test, you are not going to eat and drink overnight before you blood sample. Blood samples are taken early in the morning and another sample 2 hours after drinking a sugary water. The samples are sent to the laboratory for analysis and results are available within a week.
