Risk Factors for Developing Type 2 Diabetes

Your chances of developing Type 2 Diabetes depends on a number of different factors, including your family background, your weight, and body shape, and how much physical activity you take.

Those that have lower risk to develop Type 2 diabetes are the following:

  • When few or only one family member with diabetes
  • Caucasian
  • No previous gestational diabetes
  • Fairly active
  • Normal weight for height

Those that have higher risk to develop Type 2 Diabetes are the following:

  • When many family members with diabetes
  • African Caribbean or South American
  • Have gestation diabetes in the past
  • Very little activity everyday
  • Overweight, especially around the waist
