Should You Get a Flu Shot?
How often should you get a flu shot? Who should get a flu shot? Children are back to school again. Annual game seasons, football and baseball are off to start again. And its time to schedule to get your flu shots this year.
Last year there isnt much reports about the flu or incidence of flu outbreak. But this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) distributed reports on guidelines that everyone aging 6 months and above should get a vaccine for influnza virus.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends that all healthcare providers must be required to get the flu shot.
However, one thing which was not put much attention is whether H1N1 virus which gave an outbreak last 2009 would be included in the 2010-2011 vaccine strains. But reports say that this year’s vaccine will be as safe as vaccines in past years as the production process stays the same, therefore inclusion of the 2009 aH1n1 virus will not be a problem.
Influenza or commonly known as flu is not simply a bad colds. It is a self-contained viral illness. Last year of spring the outbreak of a novel influenza virus called aH1n1 or better known as swine Flu virus had caused worldwide panic. The virus attacked more easily not only the infants and children but also young and healthy adults resulting in thousands of deaths. Deaths which brought concerns that perhaps the outbreak is the beginning of a pandemic similar to 1918 pandemic which killed millions worldwide.
When the aH1n1 virus first appeared in April 2009, scientists worked hard to identify the strain and come up with the vaccine the soonest possible to norrow down the potential possibility of million deaths worldwide. By fall, a new vaccine was developed and made available to public but was already late to be included in the 2009-2010 flu vaccine. So a separate shots should be given separate to the traditional flu shot.
This year, the possibility of aH1n1 outbreak brought anxiety to many schools as children are back. So to be safe and be protected from any possibility of viral attack, better getyour sleeves rolled and get the flu vaccine. Doctors and healthcare staff are getting their annual flu shot and so must you..it is the right thing to do.
