MODY is an acronym for Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young, which is a rare type of diabetes that affects about 1 in 100 people with diabetes. It oftentimes appears in your teensĀ  or 20s and is similar to Type 2 Diabetes. Treatment focuses healthy eating and more physical activity first than tablet and insulin treatment if necessary. There are several forms of MODY, which might affect your risk of complications occuring, so having a genetic test is important.

MODY develops only in people with specific genes that carry the defect the way the pancreas work. The genes leads to lesser production of insulin. MODY can be confirmed by genetic testing. If many members in the family develop diabetes at younger age, it is necessary that you take genetic test to check whether your diabetes is MODY or Type 2.
