Coffee a Miracle Drug

Coffee is now believed to be the new miracle drug. It has been found out in several studies that taking a minimum 4 cups of coffee as been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of diabetes, skin cancers, strokes in women. And now Harvard School of Public Health has conducted a study on the effects of this magic 4 cups of coffee on depression among women. No studies conducted yet on men.
The said research involved nearly 51,000 women who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study in 1996, and who, at that time showed no signs of clinical depression. Questionnaires about their caffeine consumption between 1996-2004 were given to the respondents and their responses to questionnaires were used as data. Though there were no diagnosed cases of depression in the group in 1996, by 2006, about 2,600 cases of depression were identified.
Taking into consideration other factors for depression like marital affairs, smoking, medical conditions, and activity levels, the researchers isolated caffeinated drinking as a risk factor. They also found that the relative risk of depression was high among women who took the least amount of coffee per week and those who took 4 cups in a day had a 20 percent lower risk of depression.
The research also pointed some interesting finding that no same benefits from other caffeinated beverages or food items like tea or chocolate were observed.
The research implies that 4 cups of coffee a day gives us protection against many serious ailments.
